Love Is The Call
CAST RECORDINGS. CD/DL/LP
Follow-up to 2017’s Kicking Up The Dust. “A cosmic call to arms,” says John Power.
This seventh album sees John Power return to his first instrument, the bass, which he last played in The La’s. He says he was prompted to do so because Love Is The Call was written to operate in the space between the aforesaid’s beloved 1990 eponymous LP and Cast’s 1995 debut All Change. The results are Brit Invasion melodies, thrusting rockabilly guitars, and lyrics that find hope in seaport-based fantasy and the power of connection. Throughout, Power’s vocals retain their lovable keen and Youth’s production is uncluttered and crisp (it was put down quick in his Space Mountain studio in Spain). High points are the heraldic Forever And A Day and Rain That Falls. But Bluebird, a haunting ballad with just Power on acoustic guitar, is affecting too.
