WHEN is a wealth fund not a wealth fund? When it’s the government’s National Wealth Fund, as the UK Infrastructure Bank was renamed by chancellor Rachel Reeves last year.
The aim was to “secure sustainable growth, rebuild Britain and make every part of the country better off”. But a year on, MPs on the Treasury committee report that the body “is not a conventional wealth fund… typically funded by revenues from natural resources such as oil and gas”. Even its recent chief executive, former HSBC banker John Flint, admits that what is essentially a bank doesn’t have “the optimal name”.
