BBCing red
Sir,
I’ve just seen the front page of Private Eye – how disappointing (Eye 1662)! Your comedic stance is to gaslight the issue and point out others who (one would expect) are just as dishonest and misleading as the BBC. Do you have no interest in the general public and BBC licence holders who expect the BBC to be better than most at journalistic integrity? This front page really missed the mark.
Hoping for better but not optimistic.
GILLIAN ETHERTON.
…It was bound to happen I suppose: you are so predictable. May I be the 94,000th Private Eye reader to point out that Panorama’s editing of the Donald Trump speech was not “sloppy” (p19, Eye 1662), it was carefully crafted to create an intended impression, at least twice.
MARTIN KENNEDY, London.
Reforms needed…
Sir,
Each time the Eye arrives, I first turn to Rotten Boroughs. Since the May elections, there’s been a section called “Reform round-up” which looks at the goings-on of the turquoise councillors, of whom there are more than formerly.
For such an excellent investigative magazine, this section is pretty weak. Recent coverage has included a councillor getting caught peeing on a doorbell camera and another who joined a Zoom meeting while in the bath – good knockabout stuff but hardly cutting-edge reporting.
I’ve no love for the party and no wish to see it elected, but I’m starting to wonder if this sniping might be having the opposite effect of what’s intended. Constant vilification, particularly on such minor matters, risks making Reform look like a victim.
It’s not as if there weren’t other local stories that would use this space to better effect. Lord Gnome could, for instance, have revisited the recurring problem of the persecution of many local residents, in Waverley and elsewhere, over predatory community infrastructure levies. None the less, keep up the good work.
BRIAN QUINN, East Garston.
…While I am far from a supporter of Reform UK, I feel that the count of the number of ex-Reform councillors since May is lacking the context and comparison with all the major parties (“Fun Raising with the Eye”, Rotten Boroughs). Could you please correct this and publish these figures?
CHRIS O’BRIEN.
Chief shot
Sir,
You refer to Oldham’s “finance chief” not attending money-related meetings (Rotten Boroughs, Eye 1662). At the risk of entering Pedantry Corner, the council’s finance chief is their S151 officer. Not the councillor who happens to hold the finance portfolio.
