All Saints

Red Flag

A cool, combat trouser-wearing alternative to the Spice Girls, All Saints were the second-biggest British girlband of the 90s, notching up five number ones with era-defining hits like Never Ever and Pure Shores. Ten years after a botched comeback attempt with a pretty decent album called Studio 1, and two since they toured with the Backstreet Boys, Shaznay and the gang are back again. Thankfully, this fourth album feels more dignified than desperate, and fresh rather than forced. Led by the brilliant single One Strike, the first half features a series of catchy mid-tempo pop songs that tastefully update their classic sound. Summer Rain is a folky R&B gem, Make U Love Me’s grungy rumble recalls their 90s cover of Under the Bridge, and One Woman Man’s pro-monogamy message suggests that these days, they’re after more than just a bootie call. The album’s second half features slightly more adventurous offerings like Puppet on a String, a trendy tropical pop tune, and Ratchet Behaviour, in which they square up to a female rival over a digital dancehall beat. The only skipper is Who Hurt Who, a drippy ballad that lacks their usual grit. In short: good job, ladies, and don’t leave it so long next time.
