Robert John Godfrey

Prog-rocker Robert John Godfrey was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s during sessions for his band The Enid’s latest album. But far from letting the disease be a setback, he’s now more resolute than ever to see the project through and hand over the reins to the next generation. Robert, 68, opens up about his career, changing attitudes towards sexuality over the decades, and dealing with his own mortality…

It’s actually rather amusing looking back on it. I was out in my car, driving somewhere – I knew perfectly well how to get there to collect something and I did that alright. I got back in the car and I couldn’t remember how to get home. So I told my GP about this and he said, ‘I think you’d better have a scan.’ I had this scan done and then I waited. A nurse rang me to say that she wanted to come round and see me to discuss the result. So she came round and she told me that, unfortunately, they’d discovered the scans indicated that I had early Alzheimer’s disease. I thought ‘Oh my God, no, I can’t have.’
