Peter Tatchell

Peter Tatchell is a fucking rockstar.

Not that you’d be able to tell just by looking at him. When he answers the door to his south London flat, he greets us warmly, wearing a chord green shirt and a smart pair of slacks, and ushers us in to his campaign HQ – a living room overrun with placards, leaflets and posters from years gone by; it’s like a museum dedicated to Britain’s LGBT movement.

But this mild-mannered-looking man certainly isn’t to be trifled with. He’s been a card-carrying activist for 49 years, and in that time he’s been subjected to what he calls “genital torture” by the police; he’s been beaten half to death by neo-Nazis while campaigning for gay rights; and he’s tried to perform a citizen’s arrest on African warlord Robert Mugabe – not once, but twice. Twice!
