Celine Dion fans have been left outraged after the singer was omitted from Rolling Stone’s list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time. The Canadian songstress, 54, has amassed more than 200 million record sales worldwide during a stellar career, winning five Grammys and six American Music Awards. However, she did not feature in the survey – compiled by contributors to the magazine – although Sir Elton John, Alicia Keys, Courtney Love, Tina Turner and Sir Paul McCartney were among those to make the cut. Aretha Franklin took the top spot, followed by Whitney Houston and Sam Cooke.
Although Celine declined to comment on the furore, her fans took to social media to express their distaste. “Leaving her off has to be an honest and regrettable mistake… because doing it intentionally would be criminal. So please fix it,” one wrote.
Other stars who failed to make the list, which was first published in 2008 and is regularly updated, included Sting, Diana Ross, Madonna, Jennifer Hudson and Dionne Warwick. However, it would seem that the influential music magazine had anticipated a backlash, writing in an introduction: “This new list encompasses 100 years of pop music as an ongoing global conversation. Before you start scrolling (and commenting), keep in mind that this is the greatest singers list, not the greatest voices list. Talent is impressive; genius is transcendent.”
