The Head of the Charles provides a beautiful dichotomy between serious racing and a chance to let off steam after an intense summer season. And no more so than post-Olympics. This year, with no immediate national team pressures to spoil the fun, we welcome the return of the Great Eights to the banks of the Charles - a symphony in power and always entertaining for those lucky enough to be there. The men are captained by Mahe Drysdale of New Zealand who won gold in Rio and the women are captained by Gevvie Stone of the USA who won silver in Rio.
Much like Henley Regatta in the UK, the Charles serves as a dependable meeting point. Ex-teammates and rowing friends from around the world descend on Boston to reconvene and reminisce. Perhaps even take to the water in an old boy or alumni crew.
If you are unable to make it over, read Donna McLuskie’s piece in this issue titled Boston’s Lifeblood.
