N ever mind the giant moth – it’s the deadly earworm you need to worry about in this kaiju classic. Putting the ‘chant’ in ‘enchanting’, ‘Mothra’s Song’ is not just an anthem but a plot device, used to summon the titular winged beast by a pair of kidnapped fairy twins (Yumi and Emi Ito) who end up stealing Ishiro Honda’s film. Not that Mothra herself is ever less than a psychedelic sight to behold, whether as an egg, a caterpillar or in her final, Tokyotrashing form. Extras see Kim Newman hail the monster’s “unique peculiarity” among its Toho peers.
