In the opening episode of The Prisoner, Patrick McGoohan kicks seven shades out of a drivel-spewing PA system with his Cuban-heeled boot. Today, almost any brush with Radio 4 causes me the same rage but, back when it was still tolerable, there was an interesting programme called A History of the World in 100 Objects. It was fronted by a linensuited intellectual who now would doubtless tell you somebody in a cave 2000 miles away dreamed up the idea for television, jet engines, the net and any other British invention that makes life worth living. But in saner times, this boffin just wanted to impart his knowledge without too much hand-wringing or virtuesignalling.
