Welcome to the latest issue of Climber. Aside from the current pandemic, one of the biggest issues the human race faces is the state of the environment and how we can stop and reverse the damage we have been blindly responsible for for years. I’m looking at ways to improve on the magazine’s carbon footprint and, for one, the printer
I use uses energy from 100% renewable sources. The magazine is printed on recyclable paper from responsible sources via the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) scheme. The wrapper the magazine is posted out in can also be recycled so don’t throw it in the bin, recycle it.
There are many other ways that we can help as individuals, for example, by looking at how we travel and how often we do this; just one less trip by air a year is at least a start. Something else we should consider is the kit we buy and when. In this issue Bruce Goodlad explores this further with the article Go Green, Eco-Friendly Kit and Clothing. He touches on travel but also on the impact that the kit we use has on the environment plus a look at the more environment effi cient schemes that manufacturers can look to follow. It’s well worth a read and is a valuable insight.
Elsewhere in the magazine the focus is mainly on UK venues given that we are encouraged to ‘staycation’ this year, of course, with the benefi t of keeping air miles down. One feature is a tour of the sport and slate climbing available in the Lake District. The region is well-known for brilliant mountain and valley trad routes but less so for the adventurous trad slate and bolt clipping options. All is revealed including the lovely micro-granite at Bramcrag. Close by, for the easy climbs feature, Mark Eddy heads to the small but perfectly formed Hutton Roof on the edge of Cumbria – a cracking venue with a similarly cracking outlook.
