File Explorer will soon unzip files much faster following a new Windows 11 update. Microsoft has made the improvement in the Preview Build 27818 for Windows Insiders on the Canary Channel.
Canary is the earliest stage of Microsoft’s development process, where its latest features are first tested. They are only added to the full version of Windows if they’ve worked properly and any bugs have been fixed.
Microsoft said that File Explorer will be particularly faster when “unzipping a large number of small files” (see www.snipca.com/54367).
It follows File Explorer being updated last year to unzip more file formats, including RAR,7z and TAR (see screenshot). This means you no longer need to install third-party software like WinRAR and 7-Zip.
The extra unzipping speed only applies when you’re extracting files from within File Explorer, not using other software.
