Share files with nearby devices using mobile data
Google has updated the Quick Share feature for Android phones and tablets, which makes it easy to share files with nearby devices. Just tap the Share button at the top or bottom of the screen (depending on the app) and choose Quick Share to scan for and connect to nearby devices.
Previously, Quick Share used Wi-Fi to send files from one device to another, after establishing the initial connection using Bluetooth. It’s now possible to share files over your mobile network when Wi-Fi isn’t available.
This should ensure file transfers are always completed even if you lose your Wi-Fi connection before they’ve finished copying over. However, unless you’re on an unlimited data plan with your mobile network, it could also eat into your monthly allowance.
The new option is enabled by default, but you can turn it off to reduce the risk of incurring data charges. Open the Settings app and choose ‘Connected devices’ then ‘Connection preferences’ – the setting may also be called ‘More connectivity options’. Select ‘Quick Share’ and switch off ‘Use mobile data’ (see screenshot below left).
