The latest photography news from around the globe

NEW FLAGSHIP IS MIRRORLESS Nikon says that the Z 9 has been developed to surpass the brand’s current flagship, the D6 DSLR.

INTEGRATED VERTICAL GRIP For seamless switching between portrait and landscape orientation – and for housing a larger battery.

Nikon Z 9 in development

Brand’s new flagship camera is coming later this year – this full-frame mirrorless model will “deliver the best stills and video performance in Nikon history”

The forthcoming Nikon Z 9 will be based around the mirrorless Z mount and sport a full-frame stacked CMOS sensor with 8K video capability – this much we know for sure. Last month’s brief development announcement – de rigueur in the camera industry these days – didn’t reveal the Z 9’s full specifications, but its 8K video functionality will put it in the same technical bracket as the Canon EOS R5 and Sony A1.

The official image (above) reveals that the Z 9 references the pro DSLR form factor of the Nikon D6, with a built-in vertical grip (and, presumably, an extra-large battery with increased capacity contained inside). The image also suggests that a dial with buttons stands in for a PASM dial – the bracketing button is visible and there will likely be a Mode button to cycle between modes, metering and WB functions. What looks like a locking knob next to it suggests that the bottom portion rotates – which could be for quick selection between single /continuous/self-timer/M-Up shooting modes.
