There’s nothing quite like settling down with a good book, is there? Especially a good Doctor Who book.
For quite a few of us, they might have been among the first books we ever read. Which one was your first? In my case, there was already a burgeoning Doctor Who library on my bedroom bookcase as far back as I can remember. Thanks to my lovely Dad, I was already the proud owner of an impressive number of Doctor Who novelisations from the moment I came into the world.
Each new release brought with it a raw excitement – partly because it meant there was another gap filled, and partly because there was the anticipation of what beautiful picture would appear on the cover. Okay, in the early 1980s, it would more often than not be a photograph of Peter Davison slapped onto a coloured background, but sometimes it would be a fantastic painting of a story I had never seen before. Those covers are still often the first images that come to mind when I think of a particular story. To me, nothing says ‘Genesis of the Daleks’ better than Chris Achilleos’ painting for the cover of the novelisation, which is why I’ve chosen it for the cover for this month’s DWM.
