Marianna Nardin had no problem with creativity when she studied art and fashion for her degree, but the minute she started on her first doll’s house she had major doubts.
She said: “I have to be honest, when I first opened the kit box, everything seemed difficult; seeing all those small pieces laying about scared me a little.”
It’s a feeling that many miniaturists can identify with, and not only on their first project. Thankfully for Marianna, after the advice of a friend, her fears dissipated and were replaced with an enthusiasm that left her “hardly able to sleep at night”. You can see the result of her kit-bash on page four. I’m pretty sure she’s got the hang of it.
Valentin Tiphaigne’s mum always says he has “golden fingers” and you’ll agree with that assessment of his talents when you see some of the wonderful houses and room boxes he’s created.
That’s one of his rooms on the cover, and we loved learning that he spent ages searching for the right plastic bowl to make the perfect dome. Then he painted the delicate fresco on the roof despite having a broken finger.
We also loved how optimistic Valentin was about the future of the hobby. He told us: “I think miniatures will still be a thing in a thousand years (if we’re still here, of course). There is something magical about miniatures. With imagination one can create a whole world – a palace in a drawer or a shop in a shoe box!”
Great to think that long into the future, people will still be looking at a mini kit and saying: “Now where on earth do I start?”
