Electronic Sound Magazine Issue 65 Vorige editie

This issue of Electronic Sound was created much like all the telly programmes at the moment, via portrait-oriented iPhones and eight minutes of “Can you hear me? Hello? I can see you but I can’t hear… oh, you’ve frozen”. Still, here it is, the first issue of Electronic Sound made entirely without any of us being in the same room.

We’ve always thought of Electronic Sound as being at the heart of a community. We believe our role is to provide a platform for interesting creative music to find an audience of interested creative listeners. So it seems to us that our role is more important than ever during this weird and frightening period.

One of the ways we’ve tried to do that this month is by celebrating the incredible history of electronic music over the last 75 years through 75 key records. The records we’ve singled out aren’t necessarily the best or the most important (although plenty of them meet both of those criteria), they’re stepping stones to take us from 1945 to 2020, places to stop for a while and ponder the different directions electronic music has taken over the decades.

Alongside that fairly gargantuan task, we also meet Sparks, who have just released yet another fantastic album, Simon Fisher Turner, who tells us about his collaborative project with ceramicist Edmund de Waal, and Nikmis, a true original as you’ll soon discover from our interview.

We think our latest Reader Offer CD is something special too, providing a selection of our favourite electronic sounds being made right now. It’s mostly pretty underground and we’d encourage you to investigate further. All of it is available via Bandcamp and any purchases you make will, we’re sure, be mightily appreciated by the artists.

In the meantime, stick with us. We all need each other more than ever. We have some cracking issues in the works, which we can’t wait to share with you. Hello? Can you hear us? We think you’ve frozen again…
