“MY BATTERY IS low and it's getting dark.” These were the last words communicated from the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity — ‘Oppy’ — to NASA before it finally ceased to be. Oppy’s lifespan was expected to be 90 days; instead, she ran for 14 years from 2004 to 2018, rolling across Mars’ surface, searching for information and signs of life, alongside a second rover, Spirit (who ran out of power in 2010).
