There’s been an increase in cases of scarlet fever in the UK – with last year’s outbreak the worst in nearly 40 years. There are now around 20,000 cases a year. For whooping cough, it’s about 3000, admissions for which have increased by 59 per cent since 2010. Tuberculosis (TB) was dropping off until the early 1990s, but it rose until around 2016 and peaked at about 9000. Now there are around 6000 cases per year. About one in 40 people in the UK get gout, with a steady increase since the mid-1990s.
