A DOG’S DINNER 1899
It’s dinner time at this Berlin dog pound, and this animal keeper certainly has his work cut out for him. While not much is known about the provenance of this particular image, Germany has long been one of the leaders in animal protection, and introduced some of the earliest animal welfare laws. In 1881, the German Animal Welfare Federation was established as an umbrella organisation for shelters and other welfare associations. More recently, in 2021, Germany enacted a new law showing how much they still love man’s best friend: all dog owners are now required to walk their pet twice a day (for more than an hour in total), after concerns were raised that the country’s canine population was not getting enough exercise.
