In 1868, the feudal military dictatorship that had been in power in Japan for nearly seven centuries, the sh gunate, came to an end in a swift political coup. e country returned to imperial rule, at least nominally. After the restoration came the Meiji period, which lasted until 1912 – an era of sweeping social, economic and political changes that modernised the once-isolated country and encouraged a fusion of traditional Japanese values with Western influences.
