JOHN CHEVALIER
The Morgan is America’s oldest native breed of horse. All registered animals descend from the single 1789 stallion Figure, also known as the Justin Morgan horse—the namesake of his owner, a music teacher in 18th century Vermont.
Historically, the breed evolved through service, pulling loads over the hills of New England, winning international acclaim in trotting races, and featuring mightily as a Civil War cavalry mount. Then, as now, Morgan breed traits include soundness of mind and body, trainability, and companionable dispositions. They are also famously easy keepers.
