Thanks to a rule change on 16 December 2021, all car drivers in possession of a full licence can now tow a trailer up to 3,500kg MAM without taking an additional test. Previously the weight limit for those who’d passed their driving test since 1 January 1997 was 750kg, precluding many from towing a horse trailer. The DVLA will update driving licences automatically to show what you’re now allowed to tow, and is issuing refunds to those who’d booked a test. However, those drivers who’ve already taken and passed their trailer test will not receive a refund for any tests or training previously taken. Despite the change in the law, it’s still strongly advised that drivers undergo some formal training first to ensure they’re keeping themselves – and their equines – as safe as possible.
