Quantising MIDI notes for better timing
When your natural musical timing isn’t impeccable, you can try using Quantisation to improve the timing
Modern computer-aided music is produced to a grid. Our song projects have a timeline that strictly follows a defined tempo and time signature. GarageBand works exactly this way and it allows for accuracy across our track regions. Quantisation helps here to automatically pull notes into alignment on that grid, in order to improve timing. This is especially important when playing against drum patterns or other loops that adhere more strictly than say, a synth part. To illustrate this, we’re going to look at Quantising a green MIDI region that represents a pretty loosely recorded keyboard line.
