Welcome to our June issue! We have an exclusive cover interview this month with Pierce The Veil’s Mike Fuentes. The band are whipping up a frenzy with their new album and tour and Mike tells us how they built their unique sound up to be what it is today. In fact, this issue is chocked full of interviews with drummers from huge bands: we’ve got Chris Maas from Mumford & Sons, Sarah Jones (who has played for Hot Chip, NZCA Lines, Bat For Lashes, New Young Pony Club and Bloc Party), Franklin Vanderbilt (he of Lenny Kravitz, Stevie Wonder and Chaka Khan fame), and Austrian percussionist Bernhard Schimpelsberger describes his unique Rhythm Diaries tour.
We’ve also got our annual guide to this year’s hottest festivals. So to celebrate that time of year we have a pair of Reading or Leeds festival camping weekend tickets to give away – turn to page 20 to give yourself a chance of winning.
Here at Drummer we were extremely sad to hear the recent news that Remo D. Belli, founder and leader of Remo Inc., passed away. I met Remo at the company’s NAMM breakfast conference back in January – he was bright, charismatic and infectiously enthusiastic about the new range of products that he presented to press and dealers. It was the only time that I met him and it felt monumental to me – he was a person who shaped the drum industry and created something that really had an effect on music history and the way we play. We use the term ‘icon’ a lot nowadays, but people such as Remo and Vic Firth are genuinely deserving of it, and we’re lucky to have witnessed their historical achievements in our lifetime. They’ve left a great legacy – give them a thought when you next play your drums.
