How free is it?
There are different kinds of free…
A
ll of the game engines that we’re looking at can be downloaded and used without paying any money, but as we all know, when it comes to software there’s more than one aspect to freedom; even the term “open source” can mean different things to different people.
Take Godot, for example. It’s free to download and use, and the project also makes the source code available under the MIT licence, meaning that you can examine it, modify it and distribute it. So, you could figure out a troublesome feature by looking at the source code or even become a contributor to the project (or distribute your own version). With Unreal Engine and Unity Engine, you’re not allowed to redistribute them and there are limits on how you can modify them, but you are permitted to download and examine the source code.
