PipeWire celebrates a great year
The PipeWire went from strength to strength in 2021.
P
ipeWire (https://pipewire.org), which provides low-latency graph-based processing for improved audio and video in Linux, had a great 2021 with several milestones reached. In a blog post (https://bit. ly/lxf288pipewireblog) George Kiagiadakis from Collabora covered the highlights. These include fixing PipeWire’s Bluetooth plugin with the help of volunteers, turning it into, as the blog post claims, “one of the best – if not the best – open source Bluetooth audio stack implementations.” Then, in April, Fedora 34 became the first Linux distro to ship with PipeWire as its default audio service. During 2021, Collabora worked on WirePlumber, the default session manager for PipeWire in Fedora 35 (with an aim of becoming the default for other distros). Version 0.4.0 of WirePlumber was released in June, and also added key features such as integrated audio passthrough to PipeWire. In the next 12 months, Collabora aims to improve both WirePlumber and PipeWire when it comes to both the user experience and new features.
