An exploding yoghurt pot nearly put an end to Northamptonshire born Lara Mullen’s modelling career before it had even begun. Barely a month after she was scouted at a festival in 2011, Mullen was at the airport on her way to a ‘Prada exclusive’ a muchcoveted spot among the fresh faces picked to walk in Miuccia Prada’s Milan show. But the yoghurt in her handbag had other ideas, exploding all over her passport and blurring her photo. The woman at the gate wouldn’t let her on the plane. ‘Obviously, I couldn’t tell her it was really important I get there for my Prada exclusive,’ she says, acknowledging that few people who exist outside of the fashion bubble would see this as an emergency. She gives a wry smile that hoiks those extraordinary cheekbones a few centimetres higher. Luckily she had time to race to another airport, where the attendant didn’t so much mind the yoghurt-covered picture, and
she made it to Milan (and Mrs Prada) just in time. Mullen is now one of the most successful models of her generation, with a look that can snap easily
between high fashion and commercial, hard-edged and feminine.
