New statistics show decrease in suicide rate

The suicide rate for England and Wales has fallen, according to new figures released by the Office for National Statistics.

ONS data shows that in 2020 there were 5,224 suicides registered in England and Wales, equivalent to an age-standardised mortality rate of 10.0 deaths per 100,000 people, which is statistically significantly lower than the rate of 11.0 deaths per 100,000 reported in 2019.

ONS says the decrease is likely to be driven by two factors: a decrease in male suicides at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and delays in death registrations because of the pandemic.
