KENYA

BEN CURTIS/AP

Nairobi, Kenya— Demonstrators cheer on August 10 after an opposition leader claimed that their candidate, Raila Odinga, had won the Kenyan presidency. It was unclear, however, if that information was correct, as offcial results showed President Uhuru Kenyatta to be the winner. This celebration came after a day of rallies in which Odinga’s supporters clashed with riot police. Many fear the protests could spiral into violence, as they did a decade ago, when more than 1,300 people died in postelection confrontations. There has been no evidence of vote tampering, but Odinga supporters continue to accuse Kenyatta of fraud in the election.
