It is heartening when people power triumphs over the mighty organs of state. So it is gratifying to be able to report this week the U-turn announced by BEAR Scotland, the national roads agency, over the proposed closure of the A828 between Connel and Ballachulish.
There was an immediate public protest against the planned daytime shutting of the arterial route over 10 days in September, and it was a campaign supported by The Oban Times from the outset.
The outcry was loud and sustained, to the extent that the management of BEAR Scotland could not ignore it.
