Home has been a place of both sanctuary and confinement this year. Among the many life lessons lockdown has taught us, it has highlighted the impact of our surroundings on our happiness and well-being. It’s no surprise that there has been a boom in home improvement and gardening, as people finally tackled those jobs they had put off for years, while charity shops were inundated following the great Covid clear-out. At the time of going to press, we are in the midst of another lockdown and unsure of whether we will be able to spend Christmas with our wider family and friends. I do hope so, but whatever happens, I’m looking forward to 2021 and feel optimistic that it will be a chance for a fresh start. This issue is full of ideas for making the most of your home and garden in the new year, from decorating with the latest prints (page 24) to investing in sustainable designs for your bedroom (page 105) and tackling key winter jobs outside (page 132). Also this month, we’re thrilled to announce the 2020 winners of Period Living’s Home and Garden of the Year awards (page 31). Every year we search the length and breadth of the country in pursuit of the most inspiring period properties, and while this year proved more challenging than most, we were delighted to see so many beautiful entries. I hope you enjoy seeing the winners, and would love for you to share your own home with us in the future. If that wasn’t enough, we’re also starting two new series this issue. Firstly, Antiques Roadshow expert Marc Allum goes back in time with a look at decorative antiques, starting with clocks (page 88), while conservation expert Lee Bilson begins a focus on design elements through the centuries, delving into the staircase (page 122). Finally, this month you can subscribe to Period Living for just £29.99 and receive a beautiful Sophie Allport apron and teatowel, as well as a recipe book, together worth £39.99. If you’re stuck indoors over winter, then what better way to pass the time? Wishing you a wonderful new year from the whole team. Enjoy the issue!
