PROG FILE
ARILD BRØTER IS a modest chap. In Prog’s natter with the drummer and founder of Norwegian instrumental jazzproggers Pymlico, he downplays his drum tutor status (“I have a day job,” he mentions, vaguely), his time studying at the Los Angeles College Of Music (the home of alumni such as Tal Wilkenfeld, with late Toto drummer Joe Porcaro an establishment co-chair) and the time he won the chance to jump on Ian Mosley’s drum stool at the 2011 Marillion Weekender in the Netherlands to play Deserve in front of 3,000 people. What he will talk about – thank progness – is Pymlico’s newest and sixth album, On This Day, which takes classic prog, slick AOR and lively jazz fusion then adds funky sax and brass to a peppy hybrid that harks back to Brøter’s first sonic experiences.
