One of death metal’s most legendary bands, At The Gates have frequently exhibited an experimental streak, but never with such gusto as on the Gothenburg crew’s latest album, The Nightmare Of Being (Century Media). Although still rooted in the melodic brutality of their classic early works, the Swedes have written their most adventurous material yet, with swirling saxophones, tremulous flutes, a ballsout krautrock tune (Cosmic Pessimism) and a fascinating, underlying concept based upon notions of Pessimist Philosophy and supernatural horror. If that wasn’t prog enough, a bonus disc features highlights from At The Gates’ 2019 Roadburn performance, King Crimson and Philip Glass covers included.
