Swedish prog metallers Wolverine are back with their first full-length album in a decade. Why has it taken them so long? Life just got in the way, they say. Drummer Marcus Losbjer and frontman Stefan Zell tell Prog about the blood, sweat and tears behind Anomalies, and why we might not have to wait so long for its follow-up.

“We knew what songs would be on the album, but they were not completely finished, and that was one-and-a-half years ago! Everything takes time and life stuff gets in the way.”

Wolverine aren’t a band inclined to watch the clock. The Swedes’ latest album Anomalies arrives after yet another interminable wait. Five years on from A Darkened Sun, the EP and accompanying movie that felt like a precursor to something bigger (but wasn’t), and a decade on from their last full album, Machina Viva, drummer Marcus Losbjer and frontman Stefan Zell are a little sheepish about the amount of time it always takes them to re-emerge.
“With A Darkened Sun, we thought maybe we should release an EP so we could get something out quicker,” says Losbjer. “Then our bass player had the brilliant idea, ‘Let’s make a film!’ So it became a full-length album in terms of project time anyway.”
