First LNWR push-pull trains AUTO-TRAINS, or push-and-pull trains, have just made their first appearance on the Lancashire and Yorkshire section of the London and North Western Railway, a service having been inaugurated on February 6 between Manchester (Victoria) and Atherton. The engines employed are Horwich-built 2-4-2 tank engines, and the vehicles are modern elliptical compartment stock, in twocoach sets, each of which consists of composite brake with driving compartment, and eight-compartment third. The engines are allowed to push a maximum of six bogie coaches, but the normal load is four cars.
