I don’t know about you, but as soon as the weather starts turning rubbish and the nights draw in, I always seem to find myself gravitating back to the garage. A long-running VW MkII Golf 16v project is the focus of my winter work. It’s been a collection of parts for the past two years and has basically been waiting for me to crack on. The need for a gearbox has been holding things back but that’s easily remedied and hopefully by the time you read this, a suitably rebuilt replacement will be in the bay. If you guys are in the middle of a project, we’d love to see some shots and swap stories of pain and triumph, so drop us an email at the usual address: retrocars.ed@kelsey.co.uk Along the same theme, there are some superb tales of home-built retro gems in this very issue. The Salzburg rally Beetle replica built by Canadian enthusiast Dave Hord really is a sight to behold. This near
period-perfect rally weapon wouldn’t look out of place at any of the world’s top concours competitions. He’s engineered, fitted and wired every part himself and it’s a truly inspirational tale of determination and attention to detail. (See page 30). Also in this issue we tell the tale of Anglia owner and ex-motorsport mechanic Barry Harper who has built his dream hot-rod racer. Barry worked on these machines back in the heyday of hot-rod racing - a grass roots formula raced on oval tracks during the ‘Seventies. Going up against Barry Lee in his Escort one heroic purple Anglia, piloted by George Polly, toppled these twin-cam titans. Barry’s Anglia is a tribute to that era, the underdog car that won and his close friend George Polly. (See page 45). I’ve been busy too, getting behind the wheel of a superb Lotus Carlton for our Dream Drive this month. This super-saloon still impresses and feels every bit as fearsome as its legendary reputation suggests. The surprise is however, just how useable this 3.6-litre twin-turbocharged six-pot powered monster is on the run to the shops!
