Teach Primary  |  V.14 No.6
There’s always a lot to think about
when it comes to planning for the
new school year, but this September
it seems to be multiplied ten-fold.
How will children catch up on
missed learning? How can we support NQTs
who have missed out on in-school experience?
How can we get routines and behaviour back on
track, while recognising that many children will
have experienced loss and trauma?
It’s certainly a lot to think about, but fear not, you are not alone
and I hope you find some of the answers to these important
questions in this issue.
We’re living in tumultuous times and the explosion of Black Lives
Matter protests will not have gone unnoticed by many pupils. As
Beki Martin explains on page 17, even very young children care
deeply about injustice, and it’s key that we nurture pupils’ natural
instincts to shape society for the better. This issue we’ve got advice
for how to talk to children about issues surrounding race (p88),
a lesson plan based on a brilliant new book to help you explore
black history and children’s rights (p102) and advice for how to
confidently teach about Islam (p93).
Equally important is giving children a break from heavy subjects,
especially with everything going on at the moment. We’ve got a
beautiful Van Gogh-inspired art planning sequence on page 60 and a
great urban legends literacy lesson plan on page 100.
I want to finish by echoing Zak Willis’ sentiments on page 27: you
are all amazing at what you do and the enormous contributions
you’ve made during this unique period deserve to be remembered
and celebrated.
