I love this time of year but I know others can find it difficult. I have two daughters-in-law and both are already excited to see the festive decorations appearing in the stores. Christmas time should really be about family, sharing and caring. It is also about following traditions, either general or personal to your own family.
The ways in which Christmas is celebrated vary so much around the world, from the date and time we eat our Christmas meal, to the giving and opening of gifts. But also in the different traditions… here are a few more unusual ones.
Did you know that in Caracas, capital city of Venezuela, people make their way to mass on roller skates! The tradition is thought to date back to the sixties and has become so popular that major streets are now often closed to traffic, allowing skaters to arrive at church safely. Swedish towns and homes are decorated with traditional straw goats wrapped with red ribbon, referring to the Yule Goat folk tale of a man-sized, goat-like figure being led by Saint Nicholas.
Norwegians are said to lock away all brooms and brushes until after the seasonal festivities as, according to folklore, witches and evil spirits fly around, generally causing mayhem.
I can still remember my grandmother hiding a sixpence in our Christmas pudding, bringing luck to whoever found it in their portion. In parts of Germany and America they continue a tradition of hiding a pickle decoration among the other baubles hanging from the Christmas tree. Children are encouraged to hunt out the pickle, with an extra gift for the finder.
Do you have any bear-related traditions or celebrations? I would love to hear all about them. Email editor@teddybeartimes.com
