One of the things I try to get students to do, particularly the ones who concentrate on painting as opposed to sculpture or the other things that constitute fine art, like film, performance, or printmaking, is not to take the medium for granted. ‘How do you stretch canvas?’ is a good question. But why do we paint on canvas in the first place?
