GOING NOWHERE? THE DEADLOCK OVER BREXIT
The Cabinet was set to assemble at Chequers, the Prime Minister’s country retreat, on Friday to thrash out an agreed stance on the Brexit deal. After months of arguments in the Cabinet over future customs plans, Downing Street said on Monday that it had found a “third way” between the two contested options: the so-called “maximum facilitation” plan, which relies on technology to reduce border friction, and the “new customs partnership”, which would lead to Britain collecting tariffs on behalf of the EU. However, Theresa May’s search for a compromise prompted a new round of Tory infighting. Brexiteers expressed fears that the new plan would represent a mere rebranding of the PM’s favoured customs partnership option. Jacob Rees-Mogg warned May that her Government would collapse if she conceded too much ground to Brussels.
