Mahamat-Saleh Haroun is a titan of African cinema. Not only did he write, direct and star in Chad’s first feature film, Bye Bye Africa (1999) but since then he’s made a series of acclaimed, and often devastating dramas, including Abouna (2002), about two young brothers dealing with being abandoned by their father, A Screaming Man (2010), where a man betrays his son to keep a job the middle of a civil war, and A Season In France (2017), in which a family of African refugees are brutalised by French bureaucracy.
