In discussions about climate change, it’s often pointed out that cities, states and provinces are far more effective actors than national governments. While national and international governmental organisations are remarkably slow to act on this crucial issue that affects all aspects of our lives, regional governments are often far more effective in bringing about structural change. Recognising this approach, ProVeg UK, with its groundbreaking School Plates programme, has been encouraging a gradual shift towards more environmentally responsible plant-based eating in the UK school system by engaging with local authorities. The results of the programme, which is going into its fourth year, are remarkably impressive.
Last year, School Plates had its most successful period so far in terms of impact, despite a challenging year in which schools were closed for long periods. As a result, the team now works with 10 local authorities (as well as three multi-academy trusts and a private catering company) on menu change across more than 1,100 schools, which collectively provide meals to more than 350,000 children each day.
