CRISS-CROSSING THE SPHERES
with her own fiery blend of R&B, rockabilly and country sass, Canadian-born soul stirrer Tami Neilson has charmed the fickle ears of the press, bagged a few awards, picked up plenty of admirers and sold a fair few records to boot, including landing a No.1 album in her home country of New Zealand. “I wanted to write an album of punchy little songs, popping firecrackers that, when stripped back to nothing but a guitar, percussion and two voices, would still go boom!” says Tami of her latest release, and on the strength of the three singles thus far we’re most certainly on board.
Those wanting a taste should check out the album’s cackling third single Ten Tonne Truck, a countrified romp that barely contains Neilson’s belting range as she preaches the follies of the daily grind. CHICKABOOM! is released on 14 February on Outside Music/ Neilson Records. See the next issue of Vintage Rock for a full interview with this self-proclaimed Big Boss Mama.
