Those with a place in the Hamburg Marathon, re-scheduled to 13 September, still haven’t received a cancellation email, meaning it may be the first big city marathon to go ahead since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. If the race does go ahead, the 10,000 marathon participants and 4,000 half marathon runners will have to adhere to social distancing and increased hygiene measures prior to and during the event. There will be different start and finish areas for both events, and staggered start times, and each participant will be given a scarf with a breathing filter to wear over the nose and mouth in event areas. In addition, open food and drink won’t be available in at the finish. If the race happens, it will establish a blueprint for safety measures going forwards and give hope to those awaiting news about London Marathon, due to take place on 4 October 2020.
