“I WASN’T THAT PROMISING AS A YOUNGSTER”
This summer, Laura Muir took her first major gold in a global athletics competition, at the European Championships 1500m. As a consequence she finished the 2018 season as the number one ranked female 1500m runner in the world

WERE YOU ALWAYS A GOOD RUNNER?
It wasn’t until I went to university in 2011 that I really started to train. I met my coach Andy, started training with the university team and my running career changed. So I was 18 before I learnt what it felt like to work hard at training! Before, I trained six days a week, but not all of the sessions were intense. Some days I’d just do a 20-minute run and my longest run was only 40 minutes, so I was doing low mileage. Then I jumped to double days, which was tough, but within three months I had qualified for the European Cross Country Championships.
