This 17th century Hispano Filipino sculpture of the dying Christ will feature in the next auction at Anteo Subastas in San Sebastián in Spain on April 25.
Made of ivory whose patina has mellowed to a tea colour and measuring 2ft 8in x 2ft 7in (82 x 80cm), it is of a size and quality that is seldom seen at auction.
Christ is shown with his head raised and inclined slightly to one side, with a wavy moustache reflecting the influence of the Chinese. His eyes, framed by thick eyelids, look up to the sky, while the fingers of his outstretched hands form the sign of a blessing. His arms are marked with veins, and polychrome drops of blood are shown on his legs.
