This rare hand-painted pottery plate depicts Mary Jones (1784-1864), a Welsh girl who, at the age of 15, walked barefoot 26 miles across mountainous terrain to buy a copy of the Welsh Bible in Bala. She had saved for six years before setting out on her journey in 1800.
Tradition has it that this endeavour inspired Rev Thomas Charles, who ultimately sold her the book, to launch the British and Foreign Bibles Society in 1804.
