This oval oil portrait, above, painted by the Chinese artist Spoilum (fl.1785-1805) depicts Captain George Delanoe, a 1st Lieutenant and Commander of HMS Repulse.
According to a small inscription above the sitter’s left shoulder in the 16 x 13in (41 x 33cm) portrait, Delanoe lost his leg after a ‘32lb’ shot was fired from another vessel at the Nore mutiny, which took place at the Royal Navy anchorage in the Thames Estuary in May 1797.
