George II walnut chairs in the manner of Giles Grendey, £17,000 at HRD.
A pair of English walnut chairs sailed above expectations to bring £17,000 at HRD Auction Rooms (20% buyer’s premium inc VAT) in Brading on the Isle of Wight on December 10.
While they were not as early as the Queen Anne period as catalogued, they are probably from the workshop of one of the foremost London chair-makers of the George II period: Giles Grendey (1693-1780).
